At an unofficial capacity, Shae has been assisting peers with essay writing and the editing of papers for most of their university degrees, and officially worked as a teaching assistant at the University of Calgary. Using the written word to convey meaning can be tricky and is often subject to individual biases in terms of grading. Shae looks at the individual’s interests to gauge how to make writing more engaging and applicable to the student. Each piece written varies greatly, but the fundamental skills remain the same, such as outlining, development of thesis statements, or the application of literary devices.

In their free time, Shae dabbles in poetry, narrative writing, and is an avid reader of the fantasy genre. Shae graduated from the University of Calgary with an undergraduate degree majoring in Archaeology and minoring in Anthropology, and subsequently, a master’s degree in Archeology.

Nadine has been and continues to be an avid English student since early childhood. Born in Egypt and raised in Calgary, she has been speaking both English and Arabic fluently since she was little. Years of experience as a children’s program volunteer at the Calgary Public Library brought about a passion for reading for her, which helped her excel in English Language Arts all through school. She is currently in her third year of a Communication and Media Studies major at the University of Calgary and continuing two years of working in the post-secondary education industry. In her work, she engages with adult learners, ESL students, and students seeking academic upgrading, among others. She has also done work as a marketing content writer for professional programs. These opportunities have allowed her to explore how people from all walks of life learn and comprehend the English language, and how to break down that understanding to further their learning.

Nadine’s tutoring approach focuses on understanding rhetoric and applying it to literature and academic writing. Exploring the principles and modes of communication in the English language challenges the student’s reading comprehension by evaluating the intentions and details in a text. As they develop these skills, the students can then actively apply them in the writing process.

In her spare time, Nadine enjoys reading, drawing, and watching movies. After graduating from the U of C, she plans on building a career revolving around marketing and professional writing.

When not baking or spending time at the gym, Keira also takes interest in reading and travelling.
